At Anfield on Sunday afternoon, United took an unexpected but well-earned lead before falling behind 2-1. However, they rallied and salvaged a point with a much better showing.
In the last seconds, Harry Maguire curled Joshua Zirkzee's bobbing square ball over the bar instead of hitting the target, giving Ruben Amorim good reason to believe his team should have won.
Despite having completely written off his previous team's chances after viewing the teamsheets, Keane was happy to see them earn a point. He also had to confess that he was pleasantly surprised by what he saw from Amorim's team.
"I said before the game, I just looked at the whole team, I looked at the performances recently, the lack of goals…[but] they turned up," Keane stated on Sky Sports in response to Fernandes' similar "got to do it every week" sentiment. They were somewhat passionate.
"Do it in the other games is the argument behind all of this, and I don't want to take anything away from United today. They recently did it at City. You can't just show up to a Man United game whenever you want and be passionate about it today [but not at other games].
After a game, it can be challenging to ask a player, "Why can't you do it every week? Since [Fernandes] is only a player, it is important for veteran players to attend every game with that level of passion and skill.
"They demonstrated their abilities today, and I doubt anyone could have predicted that Man United would score two goals and come close to winning it in the end. Liverpool had their chances, of course, but I give United credit because they displayed a little bit of passion, a lot of quality, a little bit of fight, and they demonstrated what it means to play for Man United."
"Obviously, they must support it. They have to show up with the same mindset, the same level of attitude, the same level of performance, and the same fighting spirit if they want to have a chance to win games against Arsenal in the cup next."
