Michael Owen has criticized three Man Utd players for “dozing” as Tottenham defeated the Red Devils 1-0 in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils’ poor performance in the Premier League under Ruben Amorim persisted as Man Utd fell to James Maddison’s opening goal in a close defeat.
Maddison responded effectively to a loose ball after Man Utd goalkeeper Andre Onana deflected a shot from Lucas Bergvall back into play, and the Tottenham midfielder scored from close range.
Owen was not impressed at all by Harry Maguire, Noussair Mazraoui, and Matthijs De Ligt, as the ex-Man Utd and Liverpool forward claimed that one of them ought to have been present to clean up the mess.
Owen stated on Premier League Productions: “What irritates me most about the Manchester United team is that those center-backs contribute nothing during the match.
“They scarcely recruit any players, yet when you request them to perform one task – block the shooter – they are dozing off at that too.”
"We’ve observed numerous clips in the first half where there’s no one to engage, as three of them are essentially doing nothing." They won't intrude, they won't go and cover anyone, they simply remain seated.
“In theory, it’s the simplest role on the field since they are required to do nothing.” The manager fields numerous defenders, yet none are marking anyone.
"The midfield at Manchester United must be the toughest position to play in the Premier League, while the defense should be the simplest since they hardly mark anyone, ever."
“They remain inactive while the rest are outnumbered across the entire field.”
Their most recent loss puts Man Utd in 15th place with just 13 matches remaining in the season, while Sunday’s rivals Tottenham have moved ahead of them in the standings.
Amorim has now secured only four victories in his first 15 Premier League games at the helm of Man Utd, and it’s evident that his players are having difficulties adjusting to his style of play.
The Portuguese manager has encouraged his team to "move on from the past" and focus on their upcoming game against Everton – currently ranked higher than them – on Saturday.
Amorim remarked: “It was difficult." When we set up opportunities and fail to score, it becomes very challenging.
