Liverpool could smash British transfer record with £214m double deal — but only if Nunez is sold

According to sources, Liverpool is looking to smash the British transfer record once more this summer by acquiring two forwards.

This summer, the Reds broke the British transfer record when they paid £116 million to acquire Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen of Germany.

Darwin Nunez is one player Liverpool is aiming to unload in the summer transfer window as they focus their efforts on recovering some money.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Serie A team Napoli is very interested in Nunez, and Liverpool wants to start talks for at least "between 65 and 70 million Euros [£55-60m]".

After Nunez is gone, the Reds are searching for possible replacements, and despite his enormous £150 million price, Alexander Isak, a striker for Newcastle United, is still being connected to Anfield.

As long as Isak doesn't sign a new deal with Newcastle, journalist Graeme Bailey recently told Rousing The Kop that "there's a chink of light" for Liverpool this summer.

“Isak has always been in play, according to Bailey. My sources on him and what we're hearing give me confidence.

Newcastle is prepared to compromise on their pay scale in order to sign him to a new contract, but Liverpool is closely monitoring the negotiations, which will shortly reach a conclusion.

We wait to see how things turn out because Newcastle isn't releasing anything. "Liverpool is not being put off; we don't know why exactly, but they appear to see a glimmer of hope."

That will continue to be the case even though this new deal hasn't been signed. "Obviously, Liverpool has now broken the British record, and the offer would have to be similar to get Isak out of Newcastle, but it is distinctly possible," Bailey says.

"I think a deal of £120–130 million could be reached, but it would have to be after he turned down a contract offer. Liverpool is still working on further targets.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio is now adamant that Liverpool wants to sign Osimhen, a striker for Napoli with a €75 million (£64 million) release clause in his contract that expires in mid-July, in addition to Isak.

Liverpool’s pursuit of both Isak and Osimhen isn’t just about replacing Darwin Nunez. It’s about redefining their entire forward line under Arne Slot.

Sources close to the club suggest that the Dutchman has asked for a more “versatile, intelligent, and efficient” No. 9 to fit into his high-possession, positional-play system. While Nunez brought energy and chaos, Slot reportedly wants more control and sharpness in front of goal.

Isak’s profile fits that bill. The Swede isn’t just a finisher he’s a creator, a carrier, and someone who can float across the front line without disrupting the balance of the system. That’s exactly why Liverpool are willing to stretch their finances once again.

Club insiders are quietly optimistic that Newcastle, facing the risk of breaching Profit & Sustainability Rules, might be forced to sell if contract talks stall before mid-July.

As for Osimhen, his name has been hovering around Anfield for months, but this is the first time the release clause in his contract makes a move genuinely feasible.

Napoli are already eyeing Romelu Lukaku as a potential replacement, and multiple Italian outlets now claim that Osimhen’s entourage has been “in dialogue” with Liverpool’s recruitment team since early June.

According to Sky Italia, Liverpool’s new sporting director Richard Hughes is pushing hard behind the scenes, keen to move quickly before Chelsea reignites their long-standing interest in Osimhen.

Slot is reportedly open to working with either striker, but the club would only pull the trigger on both if Nunez and Diogo Jota were sold. Jota’s future, though less discussed, is quietly uncertain due to his inconsistent fitness record.

There’s also the question of where Cody Gakpo fits in all this. While he ended last season on a high, scoring in his final three Premier League appearances, there are whispers that he may be repositioned into an attacking midfield role under Slot similar to the way he was occasionally used for PSV and the Netherlands. That shift would create even more space for a new central striker, making a marquee forward almost a necessity, not just a luxury.

Elsewhere, Liverpool have not ruled out the possibility of revisiting interest in Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy as a backup option should negotiations with either Isak or Osimhen collapse. Guirassy, who scored 28 Bundesliga goals last season, has a modest €17.5 million release clause, and while he’s seen more as a plan B, the club appreciate his physicality and killer instinct in the box.

Financially, the Wirtz signing has already tested FSG’s usual limits, but there’s a growing sense that the ownership group is willing to loosen the purse strings to support Slot’s vision, especially if major outgoings materialize.

Beyond Nunez, Liverpool are actively listening to offers for Kostas Tsimikas, Sepp van den Berg, and possibly Caoimhín Kelleher, who is desperate for first-team football and may be sold to Southampton or Brentford.

In the coming weeks, Liverpool’s business could define not only their next season but their identity under Slot. Whether they land Isak, Osimhen, or pivot to a wildcard name remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the rebuild is in full motion, and the ambition is clear.

Keep an eye on the Wirtz–Szoboszlai–Mac Allister midfield trio. With two world-class forwards potentially ahead of them, Liverpool might finally be constructing a squad that doesn’t just compete but terrifies again.
