Liverpool’s transfer window isn’t shut just yet. Even after bringing in Hugo Ekitike to add some new face to the squad, the club is still interested in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
The Swedish forward has long been admired at Anfield, and according to multiple trusted sources, including Fabrizio Romano, he remains on the Reds' radar.
But this one isn’t straightforward.
Why Liverpool Still Want Isak
At first, it might look like Liverpool don’t need another forward after signing Ekitike. But there are reasons why they’re still interested in Isak.
First, there’s the uncertainty around Luis Díaz’s future. Liverpool are reportedly open to selling the Colombian winger if the right offer comes in.
If Díaz leaves, Jurgen Klopp’s side would have a spot open for someone who can play centrally but also stretch defenses and work the channels, exactly the type of player Isak is.
Isak isn’t your typical number nine. Isak is 24 years old and plays as a striker. He has played in different attacking position and can score with both feet.
Liverpool have used a lot of forwards who don’t play just one position. Isak’s style seems like it could fit into that kind of setup.
Think Sadio Mané or Diogo Jota, players who can do more than just score goals. Isak fits that role. He’s the kind of player Klopp could mold even further.
Isak’s Current Status at Newcastle
So what’s the problem?
Well, Newcastle United. Isak is one of their best assets and arguably the most exciting player in their squad right now. Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad and scored 21 goals in all competitions last season. He was a regular part of the team throughout the year.
Newcastle aren't exactly desperate to sell him, and there's no official price tag out in the open. But behind the scenes, there’s a feeling that if the right offer comes in and if Newcastle are forced to raise money to comply with financial regulations, they might listen.

That’s where Liverpool are quietly lurking. Fabrizio Romano reported that direct contact was made between the Reds and the player’s representatives around 10 days ago.
There’s no official bid yet, but the interest is real. It's just that everything hinges on two things: Newcastle's willingness to sell and Liverpool's decision on Díaz.
Newcastle and Financial Fair Play
Financial Fair Play (FFP) is casting a shadow over a lot of English clubs this summer, and Newcastle aren’t immune. After spending heavily over the past two years, the Magpies are feeling the squeeze.
That’s why they’ve already let a few players go, including fan favorite Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, who was sold before even playing a single Premier League game for the club.
The idea is simple: balance the books now, avoid potential punishment later.
And if that means selling one big-name player before the window shuts, Isak could find himself in the spotlight. He’s valuable, he’d command a massive fee, likely upwards of £80 million and while the fans would be gutted, the club might decide it’s a necessary move to ensure long-term growth.
Speaking on The Debrief, a Newcastle-based podcast, one insider noted: “Isak is the crown jewel right now, and clubs know that. But if push comes to shove and it’s a choice between keeping him or fixing the books, tough calls might be made.”
There's No Public Update from Isak
There hasn’t been any public comment from Isak about his future. Isak has taken part in Newcastle’s pre-season activities as usual. there have been no confirmed statements from Isak or Newcastle about a possible transfer.
Some media outlets have mentioned interest from Liverpool, but no official move has been announced. No player in his position wouldn’t be. But for now, he’s focused on pre-season and getting ready for Newcastle’s new campaign.
What makes things even more interesting is that Saudi side Al Hilal who have been linked with just about every big-name striker this summer aren’t in concrete talks with Isak either.
There were whispers of interest, but nothing serious. That effectively leaves the door slightly ajar for Liverpool, should they choose to walk through it.
Liverpool’s Transfer Approach Under Klopp
Jurgen Klopp has made it clear in the past that he values squad balance. He doesn’t like bloated squads, and he’s not the kind of manager to hoard attackers just for the sake of it.
So if Isak were to come in, someone would likely have to leave. All signs point to Díaz being the likely candidate.
There have been reports of interest from Barcelona and even PSG. If Liverpool can get a decent fee around £60-70 million, they might just cash in.
Díaz has had good moments in a Liverpool shirt, but he hasn’t quite been as consistent or effective as the club hoped when they signed him from Porto.
Plus, his potential sale could almost entirely fund a move for Isak, who would bring a very different dimension to the Reds' attack.
Would Isak Actually Suit Liverpool?
Absolutely.
This isn’t a panic move or a flashy signing for the sake of it. Isak could fit Liverpool’s style of play. Isak is fast, comfortable with the ball, and always finds good positions in attack. Isak is 24 years old and plays in a forward role.
Liverpool have used players in similar positions in recent seasons, there has been media discussion about possible interest, but no official decisions or roles have been announced.
Instead, he could be part of the forward rotation and build his place as time goes on, like many players have done in Klopp’s system.
He could be rotated with Ekitike, Jota, and Gakpo. But over time, he could easily become the focal point of the attack.
Former Liverpool midfielder and pundit Danny Murphy recently said on talkSPORT: “Isak is quality. He’s not just fast and flashy, he’s smart with his movement and confident in tight spaces. I think he’d do well under Klopp.”
And he’s not wrong. Isak has already adapt to the physical side of football in England. He’s played regularly and has made an impact in important matches for Newcastle.
A Transfer Window That’s Still Unfolding
Liverpool aren’t done this summer. The Ekitike signing was a smart, forward-thinking move, but it won’t be the last. Midfield reinforcements are still being looked at, and the Díaz situation will shape what happens next.
Isak isn’t actively on the market, and Newcastle won’t give him up easily. But football moves fast, especially during the final weeks of the transfer window.
If Newcastle decide they need to sell, and if Liverpool decide to go all-in, this could pick up pace very quickly.
At the moment, though, it’s all quiet. No concrete bid, just interest, quiet conversations, and a feeling that this story isn’t quite finished.
Wanderlustsport Verdict
Whether or not Isak ends up in a Liverpool shirt this summer, the interest says a lot about where the club is heading.
Klopp wants more flexibility in attack. He wants players who can press, link up, and make runs behind. Isak ticks every box.
But it’s not just about tactics. There’s a bigger picture at play. Financial decisions, squad balance, and the realities of the modern transfer market all come into it.
Liverpool might be playing it calm on the outside, but behind closed doors, there’s definitely something brewing.
This one’s far from over.
