Liverpool Set to Move Fast for Explosive New Signing as Fabrizio Romano Confirms Deal Could Happen

Liverpool are ready to strongly move for Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano with the Reds “becoming serious” contenders to sign him, with Fabrizio Romano one of just three sources all detailing Arne Slot’s plan.

The Premier League champions spent a whopping £440m (€505m, $600m) on new players over the summer to try and create a trophy dynasty at Anfield and ensure their 2025 title success was not a flash in the pan.

And while the opening couple of months of the season have shown Liverpool can expect to challenge again, their new squad of players are yet to truly kick into gear. Slot still has issues with the core of his defence even after spending so much money.

Ibrahima Konate was recently ordered back to Merseyside from international duty after failing to recover from a quad injury, and young Italian Giovanni Leoni suffered a devastating ACL injury that has probably already terminated his campaign.

As a result, when Liverpool returns to Premier League action on Sunday against Manchester United, they may only have two healthy senior center-halves left: Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk.

It’s not surprising that the Reds are still being discussed in relation to a new move for Marc Guehi, who nearly signed on transfer deadline day, given that Konate is also nearing the end of his contract at Anfield and is frequently connected to Real Madrid.

But now that Guehi is out of the running, Liverpool has been preparing backup plans, one of which is Upamecano, who, like Guehi and Konate, will be a free agent in June 2026.

Romano has now offered the most recent information on the transfer chase, joining Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany and our own Dean Jones in praising the Reds’ prospects.

Fabrizio clarified on his YouTube channel: “A number of clubs are contacting us, and Upamecano might be a free agent bomb. The competition is getting more intense and focused.

“In 2026, Liverpool will need a defender, and PSG and Real Madrid may also be interested.” Liverpool is prepared to “move quickly” to acquire Upamecano.

Romano acknowledges that Bayern will have to increase their offer in order to get the 32-time France cap to sign an extension, but he maintains that they cannot rule out doing so.

“Bayern will meet with his agents again; they are very clear that they want a significant salary and signing-on fee,” Romano continued.”

Some clubs from England, France, and Spain are vying for Upamecano, and several very large clubs are also interested.

Upamecano and Kompany are both really content at Bayern, but they must come to a financial deal. “A number of clubs have called, and Upamecano might be a free agent bomb. There is more competition and people are paying attention.

Plettenberg, who also mentioned Liverpool as a serious contender to sign him next year, believes Bayern has a lot of work to do before they can reach an agreement. There are no compromises being made by Dayot Upamecano or his agency.

It is now up to Bayern to react after they have given them their numbers. Although a long-term contract is being considered, no agreement has yet been reached about agent fees or wages. It’s still possible to go for free in 2026.

“Max Eberl is working hard to reach a deal.” Although Liverpool and other major clubs are watching the situation, Bayern is determined to extend his contract.

If Upamecano hasn’t yet agreed to an extension at the Allianz Arena, Jones thinks the Reds are prepared to act swiftly to sign him in the upcoming year.

Jones told TEAMtalk, “Liverpool is expected to formally show their interest in the player if there isn’t an agreement on a Bayern deal by the new year.”

Real Madrid is now keeping a half eye on him, but they would need to act fast because they are not the only team interested in him.

The same names keep coming up between these three clubs because they are all trying to solve a similar issue for the upcoming campaign.

“With no new contract for Konate finalised yet, Liverpool’s own need for a new centre-back will play a major role in the scenario.

Madrid is still very much interested in having him as part of their plan to target elite players once their contracts expire.

“The rumours about them are not merely conjecture; Madrid appears certain that Konate is interested.” If Liverpool is able to sign one of their top targets, I doubt that supporters will be concerned about Konate departing.

He previously stated: “Liverpool are definitely keen on the potential of signing Upamecano and it’s probably getting to the point that he is a prime target outside of Guehi,” which strengthened the case.

However, with Bayern wanting Guehi and the Germans attempting to sign Upamecano to a new deal, everything is somewhat complicated.

Bayern is currently having to give serious thought to alternative players who could replace Upamecano because there has been no development on his commitment.

“Murillo of Nottingham Forest is being mentioned, but he is a very different prospect than Guehi because Murillo would be highly expensive and Guehi would be on a free.

These are the kinds of details that Liverpool needs to pay attention to and that Bayern needs to solve right now.

Bayern wants to keep Upamecano and is hoping to address his position soon, but Liverpool will have to wait for the time being. “The result of that situation will have significant ramifications everywhere.”

According to reports, Liverpool has also had fruitful discussions about bringing a prominent Borussia Dortmund player to Anfield.

However, a German source has disclosed that the player could prefer a move to Real Madrid instead, and his remarks over his future have come to light.

Although it is difficult to see his club moving him during the January transfer window, Liverpool is also in the lead to sign an attacker who has been outstanding in the Premier League this season.

In other news, following the Liverpool striker’s first complete 90-minute appearance of the season, Alexander Isak’s role in an open-goal miss garnered jeers on Friday night, with the Swedish media unanimous.
