Exit Nears: Man Utd to Sell £73m Flop for Just £17m – Huge Loss Incoming

It’s been a long road for Jadon Sancho, and it’s still not quite over. But after months of uncertainty, Manchester United and Juventus have reportedly reached a basic agreement for the winger’s permanent move, with only one major hurdle left: Sancho’s severance package.

According to fresh reports from La Stampa in Italy, the two clubs have now settled on a transfer fee of around €20 million (£17m) for the 24-year-old, who looks set to call time on his up-and-down spell at Old Trafford.

The Italian giants have offered Sancho a net salary just over €6 million per year, and the player is said to have agreed in principle to the move.

But the issue now isn’t between Juventus and Sancho, it’s between Sancho and Manchester United.

Severance Package the Final Obstacle

The sticking point, as reported by multiple outlets including Fabrizio Romano, is the severance payout. Sancho is reportedly demanding at least £5 million, believing that’s a fair sum given the wages he’d be walking away from at United.

Romano said on his YouTube channel this week:

“The real problem is that Juventus don’t want to pay Sancho’s full salary. It’s too much. So there’s a negotiation going on now between the player and United about how much money he should get to walk away. This might take some time.”

Let’s not forget, Sancho arrived at Old Trafford in 2021 for £73 million, a fee that, in hindsight, looks painful for the Red Devils given the way things have played out.

He was expected to be the next big attacking star for United, the missing piece on the wings. Instead, it all fell apart within two seasons.

A Sad Ending That’s Been Coming

Everything started going downhill after he clashed with Erik ten Hag last season. It wasn’t anything huge at first just some tension over his training effort but it quickly got messy.

Before long, he was completely out of the squad and nowhere near the first team. Despite some brief optimism that a loan to Chelsea might revive his form, that move didn’t stick either.

In June, David Ornstein of The Athletic revealed that Chelsea had decided not to activate the £25m obligation-to-buy clause after Sancho’s short loan.

Reportedly, Chelsea and Sancho couldn’t find common ground on personal terms and as a result, Chelsea will now have to pay a £5 million penalty for backing out of the agreed deal.

Shortly after that news broke, Sancho took to Instagram to post a farewell message to the Blues and their fans:

“Grateful for the experience. Big love to everyone at Chelsea who made me feel at home teammates, staff, and the fans. Wishing the club all the best moving forward. Truly grateful, thank you Blues.”

It wasn’t bitter. In fact, it read like a player who knows he needs to move forward, somewhere he’s genuinely wanted. And maybe, just maybe, that place is Turin.

Juventus: A Chance to Start Fresh

Juventus have been circling Sancho for months. At first, it seemed like one of those “maybe-if-he’s-available” kind of interests. But now, things are real.

Juventus manager Thiago Motta, who recently took over from Massimiliano Allegri, is reportedly keen on adding creativity and width to his squad. Sancho when in the right environment still has that spark.

The concern for Juve isn’t the talent. It’s the wages. As Romano put it bluntly, Juventus “don’t want to cover the whole salary.” That’s what’s complicated things.

Earlier this summer, rumors flew that Juventus had offered a package including three players in an attempt to bring Sancho over but those talks fizzled out.

What really moved the deal forward was a meeting this week between United and Sancho’s representatives, as confirmed by La Stampa, where the player made it clear he’s open to joining the Bianconeri if the terms are right.

And to be fair, Juventus might not be his only option. La Stampa also reported that “time is needed,” warning that if this drags on too long, Borussia Dortmund could swoop back in.

There's also always the possibility of interest from Saudi clubs, where the money isn’t a problem though that route might not be appealing to Sancho just yet.

Man Utd Trying to Cut Losses

For Manchester United, this is about moving on and cutting their losses. The new regime under Ruben Amorim (expected to replace Ten Hag this summer) doesn’t see Sancho as part of their long-term plans.

At £17 million, the Red Devils are taking a brutal £56 million loss on a player who was once hailed as one of Europe’s most promising attackers. But they know dragging this situation out longer does nobody any good especially not Sancho, who needs regular football to get his career back on track.

It’s not just the transfer fee United are walking away from. They’re also staring down a severance bill that could climb past £5 million depending on how tough Sancho’s camp decides to be. It’s messy. It’s expensive. And it’s not how anyone imagined this saga ending.

But it’s reality now.

Fans Split — But Mostly Wishing Him Well

There’s a weird calm among United fans about this deal. Some are still disappointed not just at Sancho, but at how the club handled him. Others are more direct, saying the player never really proved himself. But most fans seem to agree: it’s better for both sides to move on.

One United fan wrote on Twitter

“Jadon Sancho needed a fresh start a year ago. Happy for him to get it now. But let’s not pretend United handled him well either. Just a bad fit from the start.”

Others are hoping Juventus helps revive the talent that once lit up the Bundesliga.

“Sancho under Thiago Motta could be dangerous. Just needs trust and a system that lets him play freely. United was never the right environment,” another wrote.

Even neutral fans are watching this move closely. If Sancho can rediscover his rhythm in Serie A, this might turn out to be a bargain for Juventus the kind of redemption arc football fans love.

What Happens Next?

Right now, the ball is in Manchester United’s court. The fee is agreed. Sancho wants the move. Juventus are waiting. The only thing left is the severance payment and how far United are willing to go to get this off their books.

Talks are still going on, and it doesn’t look like it’ll be sorted in a day or two. United and Juventus are both trying to get it over the line, but there’s still some back and forth going on, especially with the severance part.

If they can figure it out soon, Sancho might end up in Turin before the month ends. Nothing’s done yet, but everyone involved knows it’s time to move on for him, and for United.

Sancho Deserves a Proper Reset

Let’s be honest Sancho’s United story didn’t go how anyone imagined. From day one, there were signs the fit wasn’t quite right. But at 24, there’s still time to get back on track. He’s not washed. He’s not done.

What he really needs now is a team that actually backs him and a manager who’s ready to give him a proper chance. Juventus might be that place.

This isn’t just a transfer. It’s a chance for a proper reset for the player, for the clubs, and for the fans who still believe Jadon Sancho has more to offer.

And if he does come good again in Italy? Manchester United will be left wondering what could have been.
