Bayern Prepare New Bid for Luis Díaz as Malick Fofana Emerges as Backup Transfer Target

Bayern Munich aren’t ready to walk away from Luis Díaz. That much is clear now. After having their opening bid rejected by Liverpool, the German giants are coming back again, ready to test the waters with a bigger offer. And even though Liverpool continue to insist the Colombian winger is not for sale, the tension behind the scenes is building.

Fabrizio Romano was the first to drop the update: Bayern will go in again. Díaz remains their top priority. No distractions, no backup plan at least not yet. But the story is moving fast.

There’s now a growing sense that Bayern won’t wait around forever, and if Liverpool keeps slamming the door shut, another name is already being discussed. Malick Fofana, a teenager from Lyon.

Fofana’s still just 19 and obviously nowhere near the level of Díaz yet. But Bayern aren’t ignoring him. If things keep dragging with Liverpool, they might have no choice but to look elsewhere and he’s one they’ve quietly asked about.

This whole thing didn’t just happen overnight. Bayern have been chasing Díaz for weeks, and now it’s reached a point it can't keep going the same way. Here’s how it’s all happen so far.

The First Bid and the Ongoing Standoff

The first time Bayern made their move, it didn’t go well. Reports say they offered Liverpool around €67.5 million, roughly £58.5 million. Liverpool weren’t even slightly interested. The club didn’t enter talks, didn’t negotiate.

The answer was no. Not because they were playing hardball, but because they simply don’t want to lose Díaz right now. They value him at well over €100 million, and unless someone hits that figure, they’re not interested.

That was clear from day one. But Bayern didn’t walk away. They regrouped. Quietly, behind the scenes, they started preparing a second offer. And this time, it’s serious.

Jan-Christian Dreesen, Bayern’s CEO, is now directly involved in the talks. That usually means the club is pushing hard to get something done.

He’s working alongside other board members who believe Díaz would be a perfect fit for what Vincent Kompany is trying to build. They’ve already missed out on a few key winger targets earlier this summer, and with Musiala’s injury issues dragging on, Bayern can’t afford to wait.

Díaz’s Silence Speaks Loud

While Liverpool have made their position clear, Díaz hasn’t been so vocal. But his silence doesn’t mean nothing’s going on.

According to Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra, Díaz and his camp have been quietly frustrated with Liverpool for weeks now. They were expecting contract talks to begin before the Copa América. That didn’t happen.

Reports have suggested that the club say there were talks about giving Díaz a new deal after the season he had, but for whatever reason, it never went anywhere. But nothing materialized. No new deal. No offer. Just radio silence. And that has created friction.

There are now suggestions that Díaz would be open to a move if Liverpool won’t offer him a better deal. He’s signed with Liverpool until 2027. That gives Liverpool leverage. But it also means he has no security beyond the next two seasons and he knows his value is at its peak right now.

In a recent media interview, Díaz said he was “calm” and “happy at Liverpool,” but also added, “We’re in the middle of conversations... I’m just trying to make the best decision.” That tells you alot. He’s not trying to leave, but he’s not fully shutting it down either. If Liverpool don’t act, he might.

Why Bayern See Him as the Missing Piece

This isn’t about headlines or shirt sales. Bayern’s interest in Díaz is football-driven. They’ve watched him closely, and they know exactly what he offers.

He brings directness, sharp movement, and energy. He can operate wide left or cut inside. And crucially, he does the work off the ball. That’s what Kompany wants in his wide men players who will track back, press high, and still have enough left to hurt teams in the final third.

Bayern have been lacking that kind of profile. Serge Gnabry’s injuries have piled up. Leroy Sané is still talented, but his form is inconsistent. Kingsley Coman hasn’t been reliable either. That’s why the club wanted Nico Williams. That’s why they also looked at Barcola. But those moves didn’t come off.

Díaz is there if the offer is big enough. He has already proved he can do it in the Premier League, Champions League, and with Colombia too.

They’re not just buying a winger. They’re buying reliability, leadership, and goals. Bayern know he had a good season, scored goals, showed up when it mattered, and played a massive part in both Liverpool’s run and Colombia’s charge at the Copa. They’re not just guessing here. They also witness it.

What’s Going on With Liverpool?

It’s a strange situation for Liverpool. On one hand, they’re trying to build something new under Arne Slot. On the other, they haven’t exactly treated Díaz like a player they desperately want to keep.

No new contract offer. No public statement about his importance. And yet they won’t sell unless someone drops €100 million on the table. That’s mixed messaging, and it’s part of why Díaz’s camp is confused.

A source close to the player reportedly said: “Luis is not asking to leave, but he’s not going to stay if the club don’t value him properly. He gave everything last season. He expected a new contract. If they don’t offer that, and Bayern are serious, then yes, he wants to go.”

It’s also worth noting that Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards have a big job this summer rebuilding Liverpool’s squad. Selling Díaz might give them the money to push for another attacker or two. But they also know that letting him go would upset a lot of fans and possibly leave a big hole on the left wing.

For now, the club are standing firm. But as the weeks go by and the offers get bigger, things can change fast.

Malick Fofana – The Backup Plan?

Here’s where it gets interesting. Fabrizio Romano dropped an extra nugget in his update. Bayern have made contact for Malick Fofana.

That tells us one thing: they’re preparing for the worst. If Liverpool hold out or if Díaz decides to stay, Bayern need another name ready. Fofana is 19, plays for Lyon, and has had a really solid breakout season. He’s not on Díaz’s level yet. But Bayern don’t want to be caught scrambling in August.

Sources say the club already asked Lyon about what it would take to sign him. Nothing advanced yet. No offer on the table. But Fofana is now a name worth tracking.

He’s fast, good on the ball, and fearless when it comes to one versus one. Not a finished product. But the kind of young player Bayern can develop into a starter. If the Díaz deal collapses, this could be the next one they try to get over the line.

What Happens Now?

Bayern are expected to submit their improved offer within days. Some reports suggest it could reach €80 million. That still might not be enough, but it’s closer to what Liverpool want. If that bid lands, the pressure shifts.

Liverpool will have to make a real decision. Do they hold their ground and risk upsetting a key player? Or do they cash in and use the money to strengthen other parts of the squad?

It all depends on what Díaz wants. If he shows any sign that he’s thinking about leaving, Bayern will be ready. But if he stays quiet and Slot talks him into staying, that might be the end of it.

Either way, Bayern aren’t waiting long. They’ve missed out on several targets already, and this summer is slipping away. If the Díaz deal doesn’t happen soon, they’ll pull the plug and move on. Fofana’s the backup. But Bayern still want Díaz first.

Wanderlustsport Verdict

This transfer window has seen a lot of surprises, but this one feels different. It’s not just a bidding war. It’s a quiet battle of strategy. Bayern knows exactly what they want. Liverpool know what they stand to lose. And Díaz is stuck in the middle, waiting for someone to make the first real move.

He’s not forcing an exit. But he’s watching everything closely. If Bayern hit the right number and Liverpool hesitate, this could still be the move of the summer.

It all depends on the next few days.
