Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has urged his players to alter how they are viewed after co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe's criticism this week.
United are heading toward the club's worst season since being relegated from the top division in 1974, and Ratcliffe targeted underachieving players during a series of media interviews this week.
"It requires time for us to transition from the past to a new position in the future," Ratcliffe stated. "Some players aren't suitable, and others may be getting paid too much, but shaping the squad that we have complete responsibility and accountability for will require time." We are currently in a phase of change as we transition from the past to the future.
The billionaire issued those remarks right after specifically mentioning Antony, Casemiro, Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund, and Jadon Sancho, astonishing fans with his straightforwardness.
Casemiro, Onana, and Hojlund are still in the existing squad, while Antony and Sancho are on loan.
"Like it or not, we have inherited those matters and need to address them," he stated.
Ratcliffe's comments were predictably raised with Amorim as he addressed reporters at a press conference before this week's Europa League match against Real Sociedad.
"I believe that if we are truthful, at this time, everyone – including myself and all the players – is not performing to their potential." Therefore, we can continually modify that. "I consider myself to be part of that underperforming group," Amorim said.
"You’re referring to players such as Casemiro, who have won everything, and we understand that these types of players can perform at an even higher level." Thus, that is the emphasis. [Ratcliffe] was truthful about that. The goal is to alter his perspective and to shift everyone's opinions.
"As a top player in this football club, and I too – many believe I am not fit for the club – I feel that you can alter that perception with outcomes." During training, I sense they desire that very much, particularly [against Real Sociedad].
Ratcliffe's conversations also featured his appreciation for Amorim, who has undeniably taken on a challenging situation since departing from Sporting CP to join United in November.
The Portuguese acknowledged that his association with the club president has been "excellent since day one."
He stated: "I believe we are truly straightforward and truthful with one another. It's somewhat the character. In that regard, we are quite alike, which is why I have consistently felt the backing of the board and particularly from Sir Jim. I can't reveal the discussions, but they are straightforward, transparent, and sincere talks.
