Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has finalized an agreement to invest nearly £40m in Trent Rockets, one of the eight cricket franchises participating in The Hundred.
Established in 2019, Trent Rockets participate in the newest short-format game added to English cricket, highlighting Boehly's growth into UK sports beyond soccer.
Initially reported by the Telegraph and later confirmed by other sources, the agreement involves Boehly acquiring a 49% share in Trent Rockets alongside businessman Jonathan Goldstein, who is also a member of Chelsea's BlueCo ownership group. Nottinghamshire CCC will keep the dominant 51% share.
The investment of nearly £40m places the value of Trent Rockets at £79m. Boehly and Goldstein had shown interest in acquiring a share of London Spirit, but lost to an American group.
Birmingham City co-owner Tom Brady's Knighthead Capital group has acquired a 49% stake in Birmingham Phoenix as the NFL icon strengthens his presence in sports within the West Midlands.
Boehly, who has been the chairman of Chelsea since 2022, is a billionaire that accumulated his wealth through investment and finance. His sports portfolio started with a 20% ownership in the LA Dodgers, champions of baseball's World Series in 2020 and 2024, and expanded to encompass stakes in the LA Lakers and LA Sparks.
One year following the Chelsea acquisition, the French football team Strasbourg became part of the BlueCo group in a £65m agreement, establishing itself as a sister club and feeder team for Chelsea.
