The Premier League has charged Man City with over 100 financial violations.
After two years, a solution is finally visible.
Man City has been charged by the Premier League with more than 100 financial breaches.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola disclosed that the club anticipates learning the result of their ongoing legal dispute with the Premier League "in one month".
The current top-flight champions faced astonishing accusations of over 100 violations primarily related to financial rules by the Premier League in February 2023. The city faced allegations of artificially boosting sponsorship deals to bypass continental and domestic financial regulations. The club has consistently denied any misconduct.
An impartial court listened to presentations from the City and the Premier League during a hearing at the close of 2024. Although no exact date for the verdict was announced, it was acknowledged that a decision would come in the first quarter of 2025.
Guardiola has specified that unclear timeframe. "In about a month, I believe there will be a ruling and a punishment," the City chief informed journalists on Friday, 7 February. "Following that, I will share my perspective on the events that have occurred up to this point."
The Catalan manager has consistently expressed his support for the club, directing criticism at other teams in the league that are allegedly hoping for City's defeat. In November, Guardiola even signed a two-year extension that lacked a break clause for relegation - one of several potential penalties if City is deemed guilty.
"My statements won't persuade anyone," Guardiola went on. "I'm aware that with this club, it's consistently 'merely about the money'."
"However, over the last five years, we have ranked last among the top six in net spending." Despite our expenditures in this transfer window, we still lag behind Chelsea, [Manchester] United, Arsenal, and Tottenham. Even from Liverpool. "The sole reason is that we've had high sales in the previous seasons."
City invested more than the entire division together in the winter transfer window, acquiring four first-team players at a total cost around £180m. In 2023, only Chelsea has surpassed that total in a mid-season transfer window.
Nonetheless, Guardiola is mostly right in his claim regarding City's recent financial practices. Since the summer of 2020, the Sky Blues have posted a net expenditure of £322m, according to Transfermarkt. That is less than Chelsea (£770m), Manchester United (£568m), Tottenham (£476m), Arsenal (£464m), and even Newcastle United (£351m). Liverpool, on the other hand, has a net expenditure of £250m.
