• Reece James was left out of Chelsea's team, who lost to Brighton 2-1.
• In a press conference held after the game, Enzo Maresca corrects the record.
• Fears of an injury setback were raised by the defender's absence.
Chelsea's coach Enzo Maresca has stated that Reece James' absence during Saturday's loss to Brighton & Hove Albion was just a component of his recovery strategy.
James was entirely excluded as Chelsea was eliminated from the FA Cup, raising worries that the club captain had endured another injury setback. He has just come back from his second hamstring injury of the season and has been absent for over half of each Premier League season since 2021/22.
His problematic injury history raised clear concerns regarding James' fitness when he was absent on Saturday, but Maresca has assured that there’s no cause for alarm for Chelsea supporters.
"James' absence was intentional," Maresca stated. "He is fine." He is undergoing training; it was merely to shield him somewhat to prevent another injury.
Maresca has focused on helping players with long-term issues return to play this season. Midfielder Romeo Lavia and center-back Wesley Fofana have both been excluded from the Conference League roster throughout the season, as Maresca acknowledged that neither is able to play twice in one week.
James, included in the Conference League squad for the season's second half, has made nine appearances in all competitions so far.
