Amad Diallo became the first player from Manchester United to score a hat-trick in the Premier League since Cristiano Ronaldo nearly three years ago on Thursday night.
It wasn't until the thrilling match against Southampton had gone into the 82nd minute when United's contemporary lucky charm scored the first of his late bursts. A fast fading Kyle Walker-Peters blocked Amad's first attempt, but the ball bounced sweetly for the Ivorian, who coolly slotted past Aaron Ramsdale on his second try.
Amad stretched to hook a volley past the former Arsenal goalkeeper in the 90th minute, joining Christian Eriksen to put United ahead for the first time that evening. The club's well-known savior finished his treble in stoppage time as Old Trafford rocked in unison, a general feeling of astonishment and wonder permeating the crowd ready to celebrate a victory after what had been a mainly lackluster effort.
In addition to being the first hat-trick of Amad's professional career—doubling his season-long Premier League goal total in eight seconds of play—it was also the first top-flight treble United has managed since Ronaldo's performance against Norwich City in April 2022.
Between United's past two appearances, 34 Premier League hat-tricks had been scored by 22 different players for 14 different clubs. Eight match balls, including one from a Manchester derby, have been gathered by Erling Haaland alone. This phenomenon is not new.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, Manchester United's hat-trick total has fallen precipitously, much like the majority of even marginally good statistics. Robin van Persie's three goals against Aston Villa helped the Red Devils win the championship that year, but they didn't win another top flight treble until June 2020, when Anthony Martial had a rare run of form while visiting from Sheffield United.
Bruno Fernandes completes the quartet of players who have scored a hat-trick for United in the Premier League following Ferguson. During that same period, six different players have scored hat-tricks against the club, including Romelu Lukaku's three goals in Ferguson's wild farewell game.
