Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a former manager and player for Manchester United, is expected to take over Turkish powerhouse Besiktas soon.
Since being fired by United in November 2021, the amiable Norwegian coach has not been in charge of any team. Solskjaer is about to leave the managerial wilderness after accepting a position as a match analyst for UEFA and been seen at a number of Premier League games.
"Norwegian Technical Director Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with whom we have started negotiations for the Technical Directorship of our Football A Team, has arrived in Istanbul," Besiktas said in a statement posted on the club's official website this Friday.
"Solskjaer was welcomed at Istanbul Ataturk Airport by our Vice President Hakan Daltaban, Vice President Kaan Kasaci and Board Member Merve Oztopaloglu."
Solskjaer said, "I am very happy to be here," to the reporters gathered. "It's fantastic that this fantastic club has so many attendees. We've met for the first time. I can't wait to get my job started. Being in this wonderful city is wonderful.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst, a former Rangers and Feyenoord manager, had only joined the Istanbul team in the summer. Nevertheless, the Dutch coach was fired at the end of November following a strong start to the season, with Besiktas defeating Galatasaray 5-0 to win the Turkish Supercup in August and finishing second in the standings in late October.
Serdar Topraktep, the former forward for Besiktas, returned to his well-known position as temporary manager, although he hasn't been able to pull the team out of its current slump in performance. They are only one point off of the European qualifying slots, but they are now sixth in the first tier.
There has been staff turnover outside of the dugout as well. Serdal Adali has been Besiktas' club president since the end of December, but the position has previously been held by three different people this season.
There is a possibility that tensions with Jose Mourinho will resurface with Solskjaer's imminent arrival. There was animosity between the current Fenerbahce manager and the United manager Solskjaer, who was first brought in as a caretaker in March 2019. This animosity carried over into their future head-to-head matches.
Although Solskjaer's United defeated Mourinho's Tottenham Hotspur team twice, the Portuguese coach did lead his former employers to a 6-1 thumping at Old Trafford in October 2020.
