According to a Spanish rumor, Real Madrid is becoming more and more irate with Carlo Ancelotti and may fire the Italian if the 15-time Champions League winners don't make it past the play-off stage this season.
Madrid has struggled this season, even after signing Kylian Mbappe in the summer. They hit a new low earlier this month when they lost to Barcelona 5-2 in the Supercopa de Espana final.
According to the Spanish daily Relevo, Ancelotti saw that humiliating loss as a kind of last warning, knowing full well that he would probably lose his job if he makes another serious mistake.
According to reports, Madrid has already considered firing Ancelotti this season following back-to-back losses to Barcelona and AC Milan in October and November. Santiago Solari, the director of football, has been told he may be asked to take over the dugout again if Ancelotti is fired.
Those in charge of making that choice finally chose Ancelotti, but they now have to deal with the controversy once more. Madrid is reportedly insisting that the squad advance to the knockout stages despite the possibility of a huge play-off matchup against elite teams like Bayern Munich or Atletico Madrid, and they will sever their relationship with the Italian if he overlooks any more catastrophic Champions League performances.
Solari is rumored to have been drafted in as a temporary successor should Ancelotti depart before the end of the current campaign, but Madrid has already set their sights on Xabi Alonso of Bayer Leverkusen as their next permanent manager. Although it could be moved up, the current idea is to recruit the Spaniard in the summer of 2026, when Ancelotti's contract expires.
For Ancelotti to stay in his position beyond this season, he probably needs to win the Champions League or La Liga. Club management will be keenly observing the team's performances as they reportedly lose faith in the 65-year-old's ability to turn things around.
