Erling Haaland has committed to Manchester City until the summer of 2034 with a record-breaking new contract.
As he begins his third season at the Etihad Stadium, the Norwegian has now scored 111 goals in 126 games across all competitions, with 79 of those goals occurring in just 87 Premier League outings.
Despite their current financial difficulties, there had been strong rumors that Real Madrid or Barcelona would try to entice Haaland to La Liga so he could play with or against players like Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe, Pedri, and Gavi. Haaland's previous contract was set to expire in the summer of 2027.
However, Haaland has already signed new terms with City, putting an end to all rumors about his future. This is reportedly one of the most "lucrative" contracts ever given to a professional athlete. By the time the contract expires, Haaland will be nearly 34, and it is believed that all of the release clauses that were previously contained have been eliminated.
According to Fabrizio Romano, a new provision will take effect in 2029, although it's unclear how much that would be and it's simply stated that it would be "very high numbers."
Haaland's dedication for the great bulk of his playing career is a huge help to a City club that has had a turbulent season and will most likely lose the Premier League title.
Under Pep Guardiola, City has won the championship six times in a row. However, they are currently 12 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League, where they have a game in hand, and far lower in the restructured Champions League standings in 22nd place after a startling run of play that results in just two victories in 14 games across all competitions.
To guarantee safe passage to the next stage, City will need to win their next two group matches, which will undoubtedly put pressure on Haaland to perform. The 24-year-old is currently second in the Premier League Golden Boot competition behind Mohamed Salah of Liverpool, having scored five goals in six Champions League games this season.
It is anticipated that Haaland's new contract will soon be officially announced, as City has a very busy transfer market this month. The center-backs Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov are expected to join Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush, who is nearing a big-money deal.
